Australian tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios has amassed fines totalling $28,600 (£18,290) this year following his latest outburst at Stan Wawrinka at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The 20-year-old tennis star was hit with the maximum on-site fine of $10,000 by the ATP for telling Wawrinka: "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend. Sorry to tell you that mate," in reference to ATP Tour mate Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Tennis' ruling authority added another $2,500 fine for further unsportsmanlike conduct during the match and put Kyrgios under investigation to determine if his actions could see him receive further penalties and even be suspended from future events.

Kyrgios' latest controversy follows a series of other misdemeanours this year which have seen him amass nearly $30,000 in fines – around three per cent of his prize money earnings.

The Australian was one of the biggest headline-makers at Wimbledon this year despite only reaching the fourth round.

His exit to Richard Gasquet, in which he appeared to purposefully tank in a game and was fined for swearing, followed an incident-strewn encounter with Milos Raonic in which he was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct including bouncing his racquet into the crowd in frustration.

At the Australian Open in January, Kyrgios was fined on three separate occasions for racquet abuse – receiving more fines than any other player at the tournament.

Yet his behaviour will arguably cause more damage to his professional reputation and potential future endorsement deals than his bank account.

The world No41 has already made $745,595 this year alone and $1.56m in his entire career.

Kyrgios, who was booed by the Montreal crowd at his next match, has since apologised for his jibe at Wawrinka, saying: "I have been fined so everything has sort of been put to bed now and I feel we can move on from it."
