You are what you eat: Workers’ favourite lunches revealed industry by industry

As January draws to an end, gyms begin to empty and new year’s healthy-eating resolutions are inevitably broken across the country, one profession has emerged as being in finer fettle than the rest.

A nationwide survey has crowned the legal workforce the healthiest in Britain – at least according to their takeaway orders.

Delivery giant Deliveroo said lawyers were the most likely to order salads at work – but more specifically, customised salads. The firm’s data shows workers at law firms made the most amendments to their orders, such as “more chicken,” “less bread” and “extra sauce,” leaving them not only the healthiest, but also the pickiest eaters.

The firm also said the “new year, new you” health kick had prompted a 79 per cent surge in the number of healthy orders across the UK in January.

Elsewhere, the UK’s technology workforce is most likely to order Japanese food, such as sushi, ramen and noodle dishes, while the those in consultancy prefer modern Greek cuisine.

Accountants went for more “classic” lunch options, the company said, with standard sandwiches and wraps fitting the bill, while people who work in investment were more adventurous, favouring focaccia, baguettes and “more artisanal variations”.

Mechanical engineers and those in construction, on the other hand, displayed a penchant for pizza, putting classic Italian dishes and pasta at the top of the menu.

Meanwhile, advertising and marketing professionals’ orders were almost as clean as their copywriting, fueling an abundance of morning meetings with acai bowls, egg pots and – of course – avocado on toast. Those in marketing also ordered double the amount of juices and smoothies of the other professions.

Juan Diego Farah, global head of Deliveroo for Business, said: "We all know when it comes to food, you are what you eat and these latest findings really prove that – from lawyers who are ever so particular about what they eat to those famous schmoozers in the ad world who can't get enough of a catered meeting for their morning meetings".
