Netflix has signed a deal to set up a production hub in the iconic Shepperton Studios, marking a major expansion of the streaming giant’s UK presence.

Netflix will take over 435,000 square feet of space in the Surrey studio complex, which boasts a rich history of productions including A Clockwork Orange, Gladiator and Gravity.

The blockbuster deal, which has been hailed as a huge boost for the UK’s entertainment industry, was secured with Shepperton owner the Pinewood Group.

A tie-up between Netflix and Pinewood has been in the pipeline for months. However, previous reports had suggested the streaming firm would lease space at Pinewood’s eponymous Buckinghamshire studios.

Netflix’s new hub is set to feature 14 sound stages, workshops and office space.

“Shepperton has been synonymous with world-class film for nearly a century and it’s an important production hub for the UK creative community today,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

“We’re incredibly proud to be part of that heritage. This investment will ensure that British creators and producers have first-rate production facilities and a world stage for their work.”

Netflix said the deal, first reported by Sky News, marks its long-term commitment to the UK. The firm has already produced a string of hit shows in Britain, including Sex Education and The Crown, and is set to ramp up its productions further this year.

Paramount, Netflix, Warner logos; media giants intensifying streaming competition and strategic industry shifts

“It’s fantastic to welcome another global player to the UK, the world’s creative powerhouse,” said British Film Institute chief executive Amanda Nevill.

“With all the opportunities it will bring for UK talent and UK expertise to create new homegrown stories to enthrall audiences worldwide, it’s great to see Netflix making their home here.”

British Film Commission boss Adrian Wootton added: “This announcement is a great vote of confidence in our creative sector and underscores the UK’s position as the leading choice for film and high-end TV production”

Action film The Old Guard, which stars Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne, will be the first production on the slate when the new production hub opens in October.

It comes amid plans by Pinewood to expand both at Shepperton and at its flagship Buckinghamshire studios.

Pinewood Studios will open four new stages this autumn, with two more set to open next year. Shepperton has been granted planning permission for a further 16 sound stages.

“Netflix’s decision to base their production hub at Shepperton is a strong vote of support for the Pinewood Group and gives us great confidence as we expand our UK studios,” said Pinewood Group chairman Paul Golding.
