Nadal over knee woe but Fish reels after elimination
SECOND seed Rafael Nadal allayed fears over his knee injury after sweeping past former world No2 Tommy Haas.
Nadal (inset), who had complained of “unbelievable’ pain earlier this week, won 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to book a third-round match with Slovakian Lukas Lacko.
The Spaniard said: “It is much better and I am so happy the knee is improving and I am able to play without pain.”
Third seed Roger Federer eased through after his opponent, Andreas Beck, withdrew with a back injury, but eighth seed Mardy Fish suffered a shock straight-sets elimination against Colombia’s Alejandro Falla.
Women’s defending champion Kim Clijsters dropped just one game as she ruthlessly despatched Stephanie Foretz Gacon.
Top seed Caroline Wozniacki needed a second-set tie-break to beat Georgia’s Anna Tatishvili, but French Open winner Li Na and third seed Victoria Azarenka progressed with ease.
