Andrew Murray began the process of becoming Britain’s top tennis player by beating the current incumbent Tim Henman in round one of the Swiss Indoor Tournament in Basel.

Murray defeated the British number one 6-2 5-7 7-6 (7-4) in their first ever encounter in a meaningful match.

The Scottish teenager broke Henman twice early in the first set and easily held on to the advantage.

However, Henman, playing only his third match since recovering from a back injury, improved in the second and capitalised on a couple of Murray mistakes to level the scores.

It was honours even in the deciding set until the tie-break. Murray produced the better shots and deserved victory over the man he says is responsible for inspiring him to take up the sport.

“This is a pretty special day for me and I’ll remember it for the rest of my life. To win against someone like Tim
is definitely the biggest of my career. If it wasn’t for Tim I wouldn’t be playing,” said Murray.

British number two Greg Rusedski clinched a 6-4 6-4 victory over Dmitry Tursunov in round one of the St Petersburg Open.

He will play Kevin Kim of the United States in the next round.
