Murray ready for Aussie Open
BRITISH No1 Andy Murray insists his slip in the world rankings will not harm his chances of securing a long-awaited first grand slam at the Australian Open.
Murray – runner up in last year’s tournament, which starts today – begins his quest for glory tmorrow and is not fazed by his drop from fourth to fifth in the ATP standings.
“To be honest I don’t really care,” said the Scot. “Last year I was seeded five here and made it to the final. But I have been No4 and lost in the third round of slams.”
Murray’s first round clash sees him take on world No101 Karol Beck, once ranked as high as 38 before a two-year doping ban started in 2005.
Should Murray progress to the quarter-finals he would likely face Robin Soderling, the man who usurped him in the rankings.
