Motivated caddy Williams sure to be an asset for Major contender Scott
ADAM SCOTT’S victory on Sunday confirmed his return to top end of the sport and he’ll certainly be a contender at the USPGA this week in Atlanta.
When he first broke onto the scene a decade ago we were all comparing his swing with that of Tiger Woods. He hasn’t yet won the tournaments his talent suggests he should but that could certainly be about to change.
The Aussie is now equipped with one of the most successful caddies in the game in the shape of Steve Williams, who certainly seems to feel as if he’s got a point to prove having split with Tiger.
The Kiwi has been criticised for courting the limelight in the wake of Scott’s victory. Under normal circumstances it would be strange in the extreme for a caddy to be the focus of attention, but on this occasion if Williams was pursued and asked for his reaction you can’t blame him for giving it.
The comments themselves were pretty eye-catching, but he’s clearly extremely motivated to get one over Tiger in a sporting sense and, assuming it doesn’t become too much of a circus, that can only be of benefit to Scott.
It was uplifting to see Europe’s flagship players competing so well in the week before the final Major of the season.
Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy all appear to have their games in order and should challenge this week.
McIlroy has just announced his attention to play more events across the pond and although it’s sad for the European tour, it’s not like we’ve lost him forever.
Of course, it’s blow not to have our best player competing, but it’s up to the individual and I’m sure his reasoning is sound.
He’s just split up with his long-term girlfriend, he clearly feels comfortable over there and his game is well suited to the courses as evidenced by his breakthrough victory at the US Open earlier this year.
