More pubs than ever are picking BT Sport over rival Sky Sports

More pubs now subscribe to BT Sport than Sky Sports, according to the former state monopoly, as its £2bn investment in building a sports TV empire continues.

In May, BT said more than 19,000 pubs, clubs and commercial prop­erties had signed up for its sports service, putting BT neck-and-neck with Sky Sports, BT’s consumer division chief executive John Petter told The Telegraph on Saturday that BT has now overtaken its rival.

“When we launched BT Sport last year our objective was to make premium sport and specifically Premier League football together with FA Cup, Aviva Premiership rugby, etc, affordable to those priced out of the market – with savings of 78 per cent against Sky,” said BT director of commercial customers Bruce Cuthbert.

BT Sport currently offers only one-third of live Premier League matches, but it has secured the rights for Champions League matches from 2015. It could further bolster its Premier League roster in the tournament’s broadcast rights auction early next year.
