Mercedes Benz set a new record in March after seeing sales leap 15 per cent during the month.

The German car manufacturer, which is a subsidiary of Daimler, sold 183,467 new vehicles in March. The strong sales rounded off what was also the firm’s best ever first quarter, selling 429,602 cars.

The highest rate of growth on a national basis was in Spain, which saw an increase of 44.5 per cent in new sales during the month compared with the previous year. In the UK, an increase of 19.5 per cent led to a record 26,488 vehicles being sold.

Growth was more modest across the Atlantic where North American sales grew by 9.1 per cent, a touch off its previous record of 9.2 per cent, to see 29,921 new cars sold.

The fastest growing categories for Mercedes were SUVs, up 32 per cent, and Smart models, up 25 per cent.

“These successful results are due in no small part to the product offensive we continued to drive forward in March,” said Ola Kallenius, Daimler’s board member responsible for Mercedes Benz.

Mercedes has set itself a target of being the number one German luxury brand manufacturer. It is currently ranked third behind BMW and Audi. The company is in a strong position to achieve this target with faster growth than both rivals.
