Supercar maker McLaren has quashed reports of a takeover by German manufacturer Audi.

Autocar reported this morning that Audi, whose parent group is Volkswagen, were set to take control of the Surrey-based operation, including its Formula One operation.

But a spokesperson for McLaren told City PM this afternoon that the report is “wholly inaccurate.”

“McLaren’s technology strategy has always involved ongoing discussions and collaboration with relevant partners and suppliers, including other carmakers, however, there has been no change in the ownership structure of the McLaren Group,” the spokesperson said.

The British marque has experienced a revival of sorts since upping sales of its luxury cars, but did require a sizable cash injection from new and existing shareholders earlier this year.

There has been speculation that Audi alongside BMW and Porsche are looking for a way into Formula One via the acquisition of an existing engine maker.
