LIONS coach Ian McGeechan hasn’t ruled out the possibility of taking on a consultancy role at Wasps after confirming he had stepped down as director of rugby last night.

The Scot has led the club to Premiership, Heineken Cup and Powergen Cup success since taking over four years ago, but could finish only seventh in the table this season – the first time in seven years the club had failed to collect any silverware.

The 62-year-old leads the Lions on a 10-game tour of South Africa later this month but hasn’t given up hope of returning to the club in a new role for next season. “We are currently discussing the format of my involvement next year to ensure a successful transition takes place,” he admitted.

“I have had four incredible years at Wasps and developed many special and significant friendships with fellow coaches and players. Wasps and its people will always remain very close to my heart.”

Waikato boss Tony Hanks is favourite to replace McGeechan with Lions defence coach Shaun Edwards expected to continue as head coach.
