McGeechan lined up for Scottish role with his Wasps days looking numbered

LIONS coach Ian McGeechan is being lined up to take over as director of rugby at National One newcomers London Scottish after being edged out by Wasps.

The dethroned Premiership champions are set to announce the end of McGeechan’s four-year tenure at the club later this week – just days before the 62-year-old embarks on the 10-match Lions tour of  South Africa.

McGeechan and his head coach Shaun Edwards have come under criticism after a disappointing season left Wasps fourth from bottom in the Premiership table and without a trophy for the first time in seven years.

Club insiders are said to be angry over McGeechan’s dual role with the Lions, which has divided much of his time this season.

McGeechan is now reported to be on the verge of a switch to Scottish, who will line up in the new National One next season after cruising to the National Three title. A club statement read: “Ian McGeechan is very interested in the development of Scottish rugby and has provided valuable guidance to London Scottish in the past. However, Ian does not have a specific role with the club at present.”

Wasps are now expected to turn to Tony Hanks, a New Zealander in charge of Waikoto, to take over McGeechan’s role, while ex-England prop Trevor Woodman, currently working in Australia, is also said to be considering a coaching role.

Edwards, who also travels to South Africa as defence coach for the Lions, will be kept on as head coach.
