A man died after falling from a height in a Canary Wharf shopping centre this morning, marking the second death in the area in just two days.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Canada Square at 8.44am but despite an air ambulance arriving, they could not save the man, believed to be in his 50s, who was pronounced dead at 9.05am.

Witnesses told the Mirror that they heard a “ping” followed by a “thud” before a body was seen on the ground near the escalators of the shopping centre.

A member of staff at Halifax bank told the Mirror: "I heard a ping and then a thud so I ran out and looked over the side.

“There was a body lying there on the floor. He'd fallen straight past me. I couldn't look anymore, I had to look away. We've been told to keep the doors closed and stay inside.”

A Met spokesperson said: “Police were called at 8.44am on Tuesday, 8 January by the London Ambulance Service to reports of a man who had fallen from height in Canada Square, E14.

“Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended. The man, believed to be aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9.05am.”

The man’s next-of-kin have not yet been informed, while police have a cordon in place inside the shopping centre.

The tragic incident is the second to happen within just two days, after a man fell from an escalator inside Canary Wharf station yesterday afternoon.

Commuters at the station witnessed the fall, which police were not treating as suspicious.

One told the Mirror that they had heard the person fall before trying to help them.
