Two commuters were attacked by a man at Stratford station during rush hour this morning, with an eyewitness claiming he used a hammer in the assault.

One man was left with a broken shoulder and a laceration to the head after this morning’s attack, while the other suffered bruising.

Eyewitnesses claimed one of the men was attacked over a cigarette, saying they saw the attacker hitting the man with a hammer.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called shortly before 6am to reports of an assault in the station concourse.

They arrested a 26-year-old man from East Ham on suspicion of actual bodily harm, common assault and possession of an offensive weapon.

Officers recovered a hammer during the arrest.

“Enquiries are now underway to understand exactly what happened in the moments leading to both men being assaulted,” BTP said.

They confirmed the injured men have been taken to hospital for treatment.
