Look at these unexpected ski gems. We bet you aren’t familiar with them either…

LOS PENITENTES, ARGENTINA
Argentina, famed for its fine wine and day-long barbecues, may not spring to mind when you’re looking to hit the slopes. But Los Penitentes, in Mendoza, sits under the gaze of Aconcagua, the country’s highest mountain. These slopes can be tough for beginners, but with 300 hectares to explore, hiking is another great option. The resort is compact, contemporary, and you can look forward to a mean steak for dinner after a hard day’s skiing.

POIANA BRASOV, ROMANIA
Situated just outside Bucharest in the village Brasov, this resort is the biggest in Romania. Ski enthusiasts will find plenty of challenges here; the complex features an Olympic ski-track, two 80-metre ski jumps, 12 downhill and slalom runs, and floodlights so you can ski well into the evening. English-speaking instructors at the ski school are top notch and the apres-ski is great value for money. If you get bored of skiing, Dracula’s castle isn’t far away either.

NARSIK, NORWAY
Ski alongside the Norwegian fjords and enjoy one of the most spectacular views in the world while you’re navigating the magnificent mountains of Narvikjellet. It’s quiet and remote – so chances are you won’t bump into a crowd of boisterous Brits – and it’s so far north that there’s a possibility you’ll catch the Northern Lights if you visit between November and March. It’s also renowned for having the largest drop in Scandinavia.
