LIVERPOOL captain and midfield star Steven Gerrard and his wife Alex are preparing for a short break before he kicks off his US career with LA Galaxy this summer.

Gerrard, 34, who has collected 114 caps for England over a glittering career, started in the Liverpool youth team at the age of nine, and plays his final match as Liverpool captain this weekend.

He was named PFA Player of the Year for the 2005-06 season after scoring 23 goals in 53 appearances.

The pair are promoting British Airways’ Caribbean ticket sale. “We honeymooned in the Caribbean, so it has always been a really special place to us. We are hoping to squeeze in a week on one of the islands this summer,” Alex said. “The Caribbean is perfect for an end-of-season break. We love the combination of sunshine and amazing beaches, and the kids always have a great time, too.”

■ European 10,000-metre champion Joanne “Jo” Pavey yesterday gave an enthusiastic welcome to news that the Amba Hotels Canada Mile has created a separate wave this year exclusively for women. The run, in its second year, is organised as a series of races through closed roads in the heart of the City on Sunday 14 June. It already has separate waves for youth, family, wheelchair and international elite runners. Organisers already have 281 entrants for the all-female wave, 100 in the past week. “I think it’s wonderful to include a race specifically for women. Having been influenced in my early career by people like Liz McColgan and Kelly Holmes, I think it’s really important for women to support one another and give each other the confidence to achieve their goals. The Women’s Mile is a great way of doing just that,” Pavey said. Pavey won the 10,000m gold medal at the 2014 European Championships in Zurich, 10 months after giving birth to her second child. The London Mile currently has just shy of 4,500 entrants – more than double the total last year – of which more than 2,000 are in the general entry waves and 1,059 in the family wave.
