Liverpool make Jurgen Klopp contact to replace Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool have moved quickly to replace the sacked Brendan Rodgers by sounding out former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp about the managerial vacancy at Anfield.

Klopp is currently out of work after resigning from Dortmund in May, having led the German club to two Bundesliga titles and a Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 2013.

The 48-year-old is the clear favourite to replace Northern Irishman Rodgers, while Anfield chiefs intend to have a new manager in place before Liverpool’s next Premier League fixture at Tottenham on 17 October.

Former Germany World Cupwinner Stefan Effenberg, who won 35 international caps, believes his fellow countryman and friend Klopp is a perfect fit for the Anfield hotseat.

“He gave me this answer a couple of weeks ago. He said: ‘I’m ready for a team that’s not on the highest level, to create something, to build something up’. This could be Liverpool, right?,” said Effenberg.

Rodgers was relieved of his duties in the wake of Sunday’s draw with city rivals Everton at Goodison Park, and reiterated that a rebuilding job is required at Liverpool, despite him spending close to £300m during his three-year tenure.

“I am incredibly disappointed to be leaving Liverpool Football Club. It has been both an honour and a privilege to manage one of the game’s great clubs for the last three years,” said Rodgers in a statement released by the League Managers’ Association yesterday.

“The current squad is one in transition, but they have some real talent and are showing a strong sense of togetherness. I expect to see them continue to grow and develop over the coming weeks.”
