Labour MP Stephen Kinnock has called for clarity on the latest plans for Tata Steel's UK operations ahead of business secretary Sajid Javid's trip to Mumbai this weekend.

Javid will be flying to India tonight ahead of a Tata board meeting tomorrow.

And Kinnock, whose Aberavon constituency includes the Tata Port Talbot works, has handed the business secretary a list of questions crucial to the future of workers in the region, calling for Javid to make a statement to Parliament on Monday to update MPs on the process.

Kinnock has asked the business secretary to establish whether Tata still intends to sell the Port Talbot UK strip products business – reports have suggested the sale is on hold following last month's Brexit vote.

In addition, he has demanded clarity on what government support will be available to Tata, or potential buyers, and whether the British Steel pension scheme will be kept out of the pension protection fund.

“We all understand the massive impact of the referendum result, and we appreciate that Tata Steel, like so many other businesses, need time to review and evaluate the implications of Brexit,” Kinnock said.

“However, It is now absolutely critical that Tata Steel and the UK Government come forward with a specific timetable.”

A spokeswoman for the department of Business, Innovation and Skills declined to comment.
