Labour leadership election 2015: Jeremy Corbyn to meet former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis at anti-austerity meeting in London

Anti-austerity fans have something to look forward to next week, when the former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis and Labour leader hopeful Jeremy Corbyn will share a platform to discuss alternatives to spending cuts.

The two men will debate "austerity, humanitarian disaster and [the] market meltdown" – though of course, Corbyn may be leader by then, so his attendance is “subject to commitments following Labour leadership election”, the event organisation said.

Labour mayoral candidate Dianne Abbott will also be there, along with the People’s Assembly and New Economics Foundation’s James Meadway. The event will take place at 7pm on Monday 14 September at the Emmanuel Centre.

It's is the first time Varoufakis has appeared publicly in London since his fall from grace, which began with an ill-judged photoshoot inside his far-from-austere villa and ended with his resignation, with him saying his absence from meetings would be "helpful" to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. He left as Greeks rejected the terms of a bailout that would bring more austerity.

Tsipras has since pushed through a deal that includes even greater demands for austerity and economic reform, though he too resigned shortly after Greek received its first tranche of cash.

Tickets are currently on sale, with four options to pick from.

Observers can buy a standard or concession ticket, but those who are feeling flush also have the option of a “solidarity” ticket at twice the fee.  Those who now want to buy a “skint” ticket are out of luck – they are all sold out.

That's real solidarity for you.
