South African businessman Dave King yesterday claimed he had recorded a “landslide victory” in his bid to wrest control of Rangers’ boardroom.

Rangers has been the subject of an ongoing tug-of-war between former club director King and Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley.

King – who owns 14.5 per cent of Rangers’ shares – has called for a general meeting to replace the beleaguered Scottish football club’s current directors with himself and two associates, and has claimed that chief executive Derek Llambias has conceded defeat.

“Mr Llambias put it best by advising me that I had achieved a ‘landslide’ victory,” King said in a statement.

King also accused Llambias and finance director Barry Leach of refusing to resign in order to “extract a profitable exit” from the club.

In a statement issued later in the day, the pair rejected King’s accusations, saying that as directors they have “at all times sought to act in the best interests of Rangers for the benefit of its shareholders as a whole”.

Shareholders will vote on King’s proposal at Ibrox on Friday.
