Liz Kendall loses more ground in Labour leadership contest
The race to replace Ed Miliband as Labour leader is narrowing, with the betting markets showing increased support for Yvette Cooper and waning interest in Liz Kendall.
Andy Burnham remains the frontrunner according to the major odds-makers. But Ladbrokes said yesterday that Cooper’s price had contracted in recent days, from as long as 11/2 to as short as 3/1. The betting parlour said that Cooper threatens to usurp Kendall – who went from 5/2 to 7/4 – as the clear second in the race.
Ladbrokes’s Alex Donohue told City PM that a poor performance in a BBC interview did not help Kendall’s chances.
“The betting public definitely feels that she’s losing ground, and Cooper is making gains,” he said.
“Since Andrew Marr, we haven’t taken a single bet for her,” he added, referencing Kendall’s shaky appearance on the BBC’s political programme yesterday.
