Kell Brook set to return against Amir Khan or Canelo Alvarez after fracturing eye socket in defeat to Gennady Golovkin

Britain's Kell Brook is unlikely to seek a quick rematch with Gennady Golovkin after suffering a broken eye socket in their IBF and WBC world middleweight title fight on Saturday in London.

Brook sustained the injury in the second round but continued to trade blows with the unbeaten Golovkin until the fifth, when trainer Dominic Ingle threw in the towel at the O2.

IBF welterweight world champion Brook stepped up two divisions to face the Kazakh but is set to return next year at light-middleweight, possibly against fellow Briton Amir Khan or Mexican Canelo Alvarez.

“I can see him [Brook] returning to light-middleweight – there are some huge fights out there for him,” said promoter Eddie Hearn.

“There is the Canelo fight, the Amir Khan fight should have happened a dozen times and hasn’t – maybe they feel it is the right time for that – there are other world champions out there at light-middleweight.

“The Golovkin rematch, if people want to see it in time to come, who knows? But it is not something that is going to happen in the very near future.”

Brook, who is due to undergo surgery on Monday, called Ingle stopping the fight “the right decision”, adding: “I was getting caught and getting caught. It could have ended up seriously bad.”
