July traffic numbers set a world record for Ryanair

Ryanair said it had broken the world record for the most passengers carried by an airline during one month.

“July was a record month for Ryanair as our traffic grew by 12% to 11.3m customers and we became the first airline in the world to carry over 11m international passengers in one month, with a load factor of 96%," said Ryanair's Kenny Jacobs.

With the summer holidays in full swing, July is usually a strong month for airlines. However analysts at Liberum said the expectation is that August – usually the strongest month for Ryanair – will likely break the monthly passenger record again.

Load factors nudged up a further one point to 96 per cent. But Liberum added that the upward trend is likely to level off.

"Load factors reaching their upper limit, so likely to stabilise in the coming months," Liberum said.

Boss Michael O'Leary indicated last month that any new aircraft purchased will be based outside of the UK in the wake of the the British referendum on membership of the EU and his plan is to grow the company in the European Union.

Ryanair's share price has been comparatively resilient – down 14 per cent – since the 23 June vote.

This compares to the post-Brexit movements of rivals Easyjet – down 35 per cent, Flybe and British Airways owner-IAG – both down 26 per cent, and Air France – down 25 per cent.
