John Lewis has appointed Paula Nickolds as its new managing director to replace Andy Street.

Street, who has run the retailer since 2007, is running as Conservative candidate for mayor of the West Midlands.

Like Street, Nickolds  – who will step up to the role in January – is a John Lewis veteran, having joined in 1994 as a graduate trainee at its Oxford Street store. She's held senior roles include as buying and brand director, and as commercial director.

In a statement today, chairman Sir Charlie Mayfield said: "At a time of transformation in the retail sector, Paula's progressive and dynamic leadership is just what's needed for the next phase of modern retailing."

Nickolds added: "As a Partner with 22 years service, I know just how special the John Lewis Partnership is. Driven by our unique business model, and with innovation in our DNA, I am immensely excited to lead John Lewis on the next stage of our journey."
