Job cuts for BmibabyJob cuts for Bmibaby

BMI’S new boss Wolfgang Prock-Shauer kicked off his leadership of the airline with a bang yesterday, announcing 158 job losses at the carriers budget arm, Bmibaby.

Cabin crew, pilots and management will be hit at Birmingham, Manchester and Cardiff airports as the airline restructures, with 82, 54 and 22 jobs going respectively.

Operations will be merged and moved to East Midlands Airport, and the number of routes it runs from that airport will be widened, creating 25 jobs. But its fleet of aircraft will shrink to 12 from 17, as it struggles to weather the financial storm.

Lufthansa, which shelved plans to sell-off BMI group last month when it failed to get enough interest from buyers, hired Prock-Shauer to get the airline back on the road to recovery after the airline lost £100m last year, and is expected to lose double that again this year. He took up the chair on Monday and has immediately made his mark on the group.
