In a statement, it said it had agreed to purchase 27 new Boeing 737-800NG aircraft, to be delivered between September 2016 and April 2018.

Philip Meeson, the airline's chief executive, said the good start to the financial year had continued with strong summer trading in its leisure travel business.

He added:

Today's order will provide Jet2.com with the necessary cost effective, reliable and comfortable environment to allow us to build upon our already highly successful family friendly business.  We are extremely pleased to have finalised this order for more of what has already proven to be a popular aircraft within our fleet.

At current list prices, the total value of this transaction is approximately $2.6bn (£1.71bn) though the company has negotiated significant discounts from the list price. The aircraft are expected to be funded through a combination of internal resources and debt.

The Boeing 737 range are fuel efficient, which Boeing said provides “a completive edge that enables profitable growth”.

Jet2.com flies over three million customers each year through a combination of package holidays and flight only services to 55 destinations across 364 holiday resorts from seven northern departure bases.
