SRI LANKA thrashed New Zealand by 48 runs at Trent Bridge to reach the semi-finals of the World Twenty20.

Mahela Jayawardene smashed six fours and a six in a 29-ball 41 as Sri Lanka posted 158-5. Spinner Ajantha Mendis then took 3-9 to destroy New Zealand’s attempt at a reply and secure a last-four clash with the West Indies at The Oval on Friday.

In yesterday’s other game South Africa clinched top spot in their Super Eights group with a 12-run victory over India. AB de Villiers (63) top scored as they made 130-5. South Africa face Pakistan tomorrow.
