The Valley became a simultaneous site of protest and celebration on the last Championship game of the season as Charlton fans continued to urge owner Roland Duchatelet to sell the club while Burnley fans cheered a 3-0 win which clinched them the league title.

After keeping faith in manager Sean Dyche, Burnley have returned to the Premier League at the first attempt following relegation last season.

In contrast, Charlton head coach Jose Riga announced his resignation after the game – just four months into an 18-month deal meaning the Addicks will now be making their sixth managerial appointment in the two and a half years Duchatelet has been in charge.

That is just one example of the instability Charlton fans argue is destroying their club under Duchatelet, including alienating public statements, high player turnover, the departure of long-standing members of staff and general mismanagement.

With their last game of the season broadcast live on Sky, many supporters were keen to raise the point louder than ever.

This fan even jumped onto the pitch during the game to wave a "We Want Roland Out" banner at the directors' box:

Similar banners, placard, bed sheets and posters were spread throughout those fans left in the stands:

Two fans made their feelings as succinct as possible, unfurling a bed sheet with "LIAR" written across it directly above unpopular chief executive Katrien Meire in the directors' box:

Earlier in the season Meire argued at a fans' meeting it was only two per cent of supporters who wanted regime change, but the amount of banners on show at the Valley suggested otherwise:

Fans have been particularly irate with reports suggesting takeover approaches from former chief executive Peter Varney and ex-player Paul Elliott were rebuffed:

Hurling objects onto the pitch during play has become a popular form of protest at The Valley this season, and today was no difference, despite nets erected in front of the stadium's north stand:

Stewards were forced to enter the field of play to clear up objects while the game was in progress:

A flare was also thrown onto the pitch during the second-half:

Meire (top row, centre) and non-executive chairman Richard Murray (top row, left), did not seem impressed:

Extra police had been drafted into the stadium to prevent a pitch invasion from angry Charlton fans, yet it was the Burnley contingent who first stormed the pitch in celebration of their team's brilliant season:

Burnley had already secured promotion before travelling to South-East London, but their win ensured they finished top of the Football League, with 93 points – four more than second-placed Middlesbrough:

But Charlton fans – nothing if not persistent – were eventually able to leave the stands to join them:

Fans took the opportunity to once again make their fury felt in front of the directors' box:

But eventually the pitch was cleared, allowing the Burnley players to kick-start the party:
