British microchip designer Imagination Technologies yesterday appointed Bert Nordberg as its new chairman.

Nordberg, the former president and chief executive of Sony Mobile communications, will succeed Geoff Shingles, who is retiring on 20 March. “It is a great pleasure to welcome Bert to Imagination,” said Imagination’s Senior independent director David Anderson in a statement.

“His considerable expertise in running and chairing international technology companies will be a great asset to the group.”

Nordberg has worked in the technology sector for 30 years and is the current chairman of Danish wind turbines company Vestas Wind Systems and a former non-executive director of smartphone maker Blackberry.

Imagination Technologies, which designs chips for Apple and Samsung, suffered a £10.7m loss in the six months to October last year as research and development expenses went up and rivals like Arm and Laird increased their market share. The company’s share price fell 2.7 per cent in London yesterday to close at 254.5p.
