AUSTRALIA’S Cadel Evans beat defending champion Alberto Contador in a tight sprint finish in yesterday’s fourth stage of the Tour de France.

Norwegian Thor Hushovd retained the yellow jersey after finishing sixth, while Britain’s Bradley Wiggins climbed four places to sixth in the overall race standings after crossing the line 11th.

His Team Sky colleague Geraint Thomas is just behind him and retains the young rider’s white jersey.
