Huge sinkhole swallows car in Greenwich

Residents of Greenwich were probably not expecting a giant sinkhole to appear on a sunny Thursday morning, but that's exactly what happened – and it's not ended well for one car owner.

The road has half swallowed a blue estate, leaving it in a precarious yet comedic angle. There was no one in it and no one was injured.

Greenwich police were called out at around 3.30am after reports of the sinkhole appearing at Woodland Terrace in Charlton, south east London.

The road has been closed and Thames Water is at the scene, the BBC reports. The cause of the hole isn't yet known, however, the torrential rain of the last day or so could be the culprit, officers have speculated.

It's not the first sinkhole to appear in the area, although there is no connection between the two incidents. A 60ft-deep sinkhole appeared last week in nearby Plumstead, resulting in several homes being evacuated, the cause of which remains unknown.
