HSBC is suffering technical problems, leaving customers unable to access online banking services.

The issue arose around 3pm according to Downdetector, which has had more than 900 reports of issues so far.

HSBC said its service is currently unavailable, but did not elaborate on the reason behind the issue.

The issue is also affecting First Direct, the branchless bank which is also part of HSBC, with issues arising slightly later.

The bank suffered a string of serious outages at the start of the year, which left thousands of customers unable to log on to pay bills or view their account. The bank blamed an unspecified technical problem for one outage and a second disruption was caused by a cyber attach, which it successfully defended.

Scores of people turned to Twitter to vent their frustration.

"HSBC website down? Need to print bank statements got a job interview tommorow urgh" tweeted one person. Another said: "Internet banking down again, second time in eight days. hmm."

Issue with banks' digital services have become more high profile as customers increasingly rely upon banking via websites and apps on computers and phones.

Brits use mobile banking apps more than 7,000 times a minute and there were more than 13m banking app downloads last year, according to recent figures from the British Bankers Association.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for HSBC said mobile banking was down for a short time and affected only some customers.

HSBC's Twitter account was still replying to customers having issues, however.
