Horse racing betting tips: Southfield can give Nicholls his eighth Badger Ales success

PAUL Nicholls is always to be feared at Wincanton and the bookmakers are running scared in Saturday's Badger Ales Chase (3.20pm).

His two entries are at the head of the market to give him an eighth win in the race, but it’s the current second favourite SOUTHFIELD THEATRE that looks most interesting at 4/1 with Betway.

The eight-year-old proved his class when finishing runner-up to Don Poli in the 2015 RSA Chase.

Although last season started disappointingly, he ran a cracker to finish fourth in the bet365 Gold Cup on his final start.

He will enjoy the conditions and is a guaranteed stayer, which can’t be said of his stablemate Present Man.

Nicholls will be hoping to win his fifth JNWine Champion Chase (2.35pm) at Down Royal with Silviniaco Conti tomorrow, but the 10-year-old isn’t normally at his best first time out.

Instead, I’ll be backing VALSEUR LIDO at 4/1 with Betway, who is high class on his day and makes his first start for Henry De Bromhead.

Although he didn’t win a race last season, he ran respectably on a number of occasions and this doesn’t look a particularly strong renewal.

Meanwhile, the UK Flat season comes to an end at Doncaster tomorrow on a surprisingly quick surface for the time of year.

Cape Cova brings decent ground track form to the party in the November Handicap (3.35pm) and it’s obvious to make a case for him.

However, I’m more interested in taking a chance on the Godolphin three-year-old PRIZE MONEY at 14/1.

When his in-form stable turn to a useful apprentice in a valuable handicap it often pays to take note and the booking of George Wood is intriguing.
