Horse racing betting tips: Play it again Sam to give Gordon fifth straight Troytown

SOME races mean more to trainers than others and Sunday’s Ladbrokes Troytown Handicap Chase (2.30pm) at Navan is always one of those near the top of Gordon Elliott’s wishlist.

He won his local race for the first time in 2014, landing a monster gamble with Balbriggan, and he has held on to the prize ever since with four straight wins.

The problem for punters is knowing which Elliott horse to side with, as he has 14 currently entered and will declare as many of them as possible later this morning.

Last season’s Irish Grand National winner General Principle will be popular, but he hasn’t been seen since April, while Rogue Angel gives the impression he’s handicapped to win a big race like this.

However, my main selection is OUT SAM at 10/1 with Betfair, who beat him in the Cork Grand National earlier this month.

That was an impressive display first time out and Elliott might just have found the key to him.

Previous trainer Warren Greatrex always thought he’d be a better horse on decent ground, so I have no worries about the surface.

Admittedly, he’s gone up 8lbs in the weights and Rogue Angel is better off for a fairly narrow defeat, but Out Sam will surely have come on for the run.

There are plenty of others to be afraid of, but if he manages to sneak in at the bottom of the weights I’d be quite keen on Joseph O’Brien’s YOUNG TURK.

The Gigginstown-owned novice chaser was running a nice race at Cork last time, only to come down at the last.

Prior to that, he won a beginners chase at Tipperary and he’s worth a few quid each-way at 33/1 with Betfair if lining up.

POINTERS SUNDAY
