Aviva yesterday announced that its head of UK life insurance Mark Hodges is to become chief executive of its entire domestic business, bringing all its UK life and non-life operations under one leader.

The move is part of a management shake-up which has been prompted by the retirement of Aviva’s chief executive of North America, Tom Godlasky. He will be replaced by the UK head of Aviva’s general insurance arm, Igal Mayer, whose responsibilities will pass to Hodges.

The insurers stressed that the “underlying strategy of the two businesses remains unchanged”.

Hodges, who joined Aviva in 1991, has been a member of the board since 2008.

Robin Spencer, currently CEO of Aviva’s Canadian business, joins the insurer’s executive committee as chief risk officer.

York and Norwich-based Aviva, which boosted its US presence with the acquisition of AmerUs in 2006, is now the leading provider of indexed life and annuity products in the US market, as well as Canada’s second-largest general insurer.
