Hiring for Skills is One Great Way to Make The Workplace More Diverse

Expanding the talent pool to skills-based hiring may be advantageous for companies on the hunt to recruit and retain top talent. A recent study showed that those recruiting based on a skills-first approach are seeing a dramatic improvement in the overall performance of employees.

Relying solely on formal education and qualifications when hiring could be seen as an outdated methodology as it limits employers to a “type’’ of candidate. Interestingly, the research showed that employees without a degree are 34% more likely to stay at a job longer than their third-level educated peers.

Data from the World Economic Forum’s Future Jobs Report concluded those without degrees took approximately the same amount of time to acquire critical skills as their degree-holding colleagues. Perhaps fostering an environment of upskilling and continuous learning is the key to a productive and diverse workforce in 2023.

Removing recruitment bias

Equitable hiring practices are paramount in promoting diversity and inclusivity in today’s workforce. Hiring candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, and experiences enables employers to cultivate a diverse and creative workforce.

By removing recruitment bias companies can attract and retain top talent from a diverse range of backgrounds and build a more inclusive culture.

It’s not just employers who are driving change, research showed workers place a value on fairness with 88% percent of U.S. workers ranking fairness as extremely important or very important in the workplace according to The National Study of Workplace Equity Report which focuses on identifying the root causes of inequity in the workplace.

By implementing a fair hiring process from the beginning, employees may feel more valued and as a result, happier at work.

A fairer future

Countering the education bias during the interview selection process is fundamental for inclusivity. It opens organisations up to a large section of the population previously locked out from applying for positions.

Recruiters are now tasked with switching up traditional hiring strategies in favour of more equitable techniques. Subsequently, the importance of soft skills is becoming a major focus for hiring and superseding the need for formal degrees.

A drive to upskill, curiosity, agility, and teamwork now top the list of requirements as companies shift towards hiring for potential, not based solely on experience. The result? A more diverse, dynamic, and innovative workforce it may seem.

Curious about potential career opportunities in an inclusive company? Here are three interesting London-based roles all from equitable employers making strides towards diversity in the workplace.
