Highest paid UK athletes: Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea stars all feature as football dominates rich list

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney has been named as the richest young sportsman in Great Britain after boosting his total assets by £10m to £82m in the past year, according to a new ranking.

The England captain tops a Sunday Times Rich List for sportsmen aged 30 or under, which is dominated by footballers.

Athletes are ranked on "identifiable wealth" including land, property, significant shares in public companies and other assets such as art and racehorses.

Tennis brothers Andy and Jamie Murray, Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy and boxer Amir Khan are the non-footballers to feature in the top 10 wealthiest players.

Rooney, the best-paid player in the Premier League, earns a massive £300,000-a-week at Manchester United and also enjoys endorsements from Nike and Samsung.

Manchester City players Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Samir Nasri all feature in the top 10 list, alongside Chelsea's Radamel Falcao, Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard.
