Last night, Hillary Clinton finally announced she is throwing her hat into the ring in the race to become President in 2016.

Long-running speculation about her intention to run reached fever pitch after news leaked that confirmation would come in an announcement on Sunday. And, indeed, it did.

Even with all that chatter, when Clinton eventually fired the starting gun on her campaign, the Twitter-verse still exploded. Here's what it looked like.

The news created more than 7,000 tweets per minute, with Clinton's single tweet, in which she said she wanted to champion "everyday Americans", garnering more than 90,000 retweets and almost the same number of favourites so far.

Here's how it unfolded on Twitter.

And it's not just Twitter. Hillary's team spearheaded a campaign launch across social media, with some impressive results.

Clinton's "Getting Started" video has had 1.8m views on YouTube in less than 24 hours.

Over on Facebook, it has gained the same number of views, more than 60,000 "likes" and more than 30,000 shares.

I’m running for president. Everyday Americans need a champion. And I want to be that champion. -Hhttp://hillaryclinton.com/join/
