Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday? Let me take a selfie, says South West Trains

The crowded concourse at London Waterloo may not seem like the obvious place to snap some selfies, but that's precisely what South West Trains is encouraging people to do.

Today and tomorrow, the train company is running a selfie contest to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday.

To make the station a bit more regal and hopefully bring a grin to cynical commuters' faces, South West Trains is providing a throne at the station to help people to perfect their poses.

Those with a competitive streak can share their snaps on Twitter using the hashtag #WaterlooQueenat90 for the chance to win tea for two at Windsor castle as well as two first class return train tickets – provided, of course, they are booked on the South West trains network.

Unfortunately, selfie sticks will not be available. One person, whose name might ring a bell for City PM readers, is clearly disappointed.

Those who are camera shy, or just too busy dashing for one of the 1,700 or so trains that runs out the station every day, can enjoy live music from Southbank Sinfonia on Friday afternoon.

Waterloo will also be decked out in royal bunting for the occasion, as will Clapham Junction and Richmond.

Meanwhile, anybody feeling a tad peckish might want to plan their journey so they're changing at Clapham Junction, where free coffees and cakes will be on offer during the morning and afternoons.

"Celebrations will be taking place right across the country to celebrate and recognise the 90th birthday of Her Majesty the Queen and we'd like to invite our passengers to join the celebrations as well," explained Arthur Pretorius, customer service director for South West Trains. "The events at our stations have all been organised by the local station teams and we hope passengers and the local communities are able to join the fun and celebrate with us."
