Rugby World Cup 2015: Steve Hansen demands New Zealand ditch their arrogance
New Zealand head coach Steve Hansen believes his side have ditched an arrogant attitude which has blighted previous World Cups as they prepare to defend their crown when the tournament gets underway next week.
Since taking charge of world champions New Zealand in 2012, Hansen has overseen 42 victories from 47 Test matches, having lost once to Australia, South Africa and England in that period, and drawing twice.
The All Blacks are aiming to become the first side in history to retain the World Cup, although Hansen is adamant that his squad are starting that process from scratch in a bid to eradicate any sense of entitlement.
“In 2007, I think we rocked up a little arrogant, like previous All Blacks teams over the years may have,” said Hansen. “We were too comfortable, having come off being the No1 team for a long time and just expected it to happen.
“Rugby, or any sport, will tell you that if you rock up to a contest involving another person and expect it to happen then the other guy or athletes will have something to say about that.
New Zealand’s opening Pool C clash is against Argentina at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 20 September.
