Greene machine strikes gold at last for Britain
WELSHMAN Dai Greene produced a masterful performance to the win the 400m hurdles final at the World Championships in Daegu and revealed the golden glow will help him get through months of painstaking winter training ahead of next summer’s Olympics.
The 25-year-old’s heroics followed the surprise silver won by Hannah Edwards in the 5,000m on an uplifting day for British athletics which also saw javelin hopeful Goldie Sayers and long jumper Chris Tomlinson make it into their respective finals.
But the undoubted highlight came in the shape of Greene’s success and the Swansea-born star, already a European and Commonwealth champion, is hopeful of completing the medal set at the London Games.
“I was desperate to come away with the gold,” he said. “If I’d had a bad season this year it wouldn’t have set me up very well for next year.
“It’s a lot easier during the winter months to train when you have a gold medal on the mantelpiece.
“Now I’ve got three from three from the last championships (he is also European and Commonwealth champion) and I want to complete the set (at the Olympics) next year.”
