The government has officially begun its hunt for a new chair of the BBC board – offering a £10,000 pay cut on the previous salary.

BBC Trust chair Rona Fairhead was expected to take on the position on the newly-created BBC board automatically.

But she announced her resignation last month after Prime Minister Theresa May ordered a re-run of the appointment process.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) today launched the appointment process for the chair of the board, which will govern the corporation from April 2017.

Fairhead was paid £110,000 a year in the BBC Trust chair role. But her effective replacement will take home £100,000.

The DCMS is seeking a candidate who has “experience working at the highest level of public or commercial life”, “an understanding of the key challenges and opportunities facing public service broadcasting in the UK” and “a proven ability to think through complex issues strategically, independently and imaginatively”.
