Goodwood betting: Take emotion out of it and back Stoute’s Thikriyaat

Godolphin have had a resurgent year so far with a regular stream of Group race winners for their now wider range of trainers.

However, at the start of the year, their big hope would have been Charlie Appleby’s Emotionless.

The Shamardal colt was a hugely impressive winner of the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster last September before blowing out in the Dewhurst a month later.

He was slow to come to hand in the spring, so had to miss the 2000 Guineas and instead turned up in the St James’s Palace where he finished fifth.

That wasn’t a terrible performance by any stretch, but he still has questions to answer in Friday afternoon’s Group Three Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes (2.35pm).

He’s clearly quite fragile and I’m just not willing to back him at around the 11/4 mark.

Instead, I’m putting my faith in Sir Michael Stoute’s THIKRIYAAT who has won three of his four career starts and was second to Ribchester in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot last time.

That was a fine effort which was made to look even better after his conqueror ran such a good race in the Sussex Stakes on Wednesday.

Thikriyaat is on the up and will have no trouble stepping back up to a mile this afternoon. Take the 3/1 with Betway.

I am expecting the Roger Varian-trained MOUNT LOGAN to take full advantage of the withdrawal of Scottish in the Group Three Glorious Stakes (2.00pm).

This son of New Approach brings outstanding course form to the table having won three out of three at the track, including in a Listed Race here back in May.

His run last time out in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot can be forgiven and at 5/2 he looks a smart bet.

Mount Logan, 2.00pm Goodwood

Thikriyaat, 2.35pm Goodwood
