German unemployment unexpectedly fell in October with the number of people out of work falling to a seasonally-adjusted 26,000 to 3.43m. The jobless rate slipped to 8.1 per cent from 8.2 per cent the previous month. The better situation in the job market added to signs of recovery in Europe’s largest economy and will ease the political pressure on chancellor Angela Merkel.
