McLaren has begun work on a completely electric supercar – as well as some autonomous features, its chief executive revealed today.

At an event to mark the launch of the Geneva International Motor Show, Mike Flewitt, chief executive of the British supercar manufacturer, said engineers are working on the "early prototype" stages of a fully-electric powertrain, which could be used in a future generation of its top-end "ultimate" supercar series.

He added that by 2022, 50 per cent of McLaren's vehicles will feature hybrid technology.

Flewitt told City PM that while it has also started investigating some autonomous safety features such as radar cruise control, McLaren has no plans to launch a fully driverless vehicle.

"Our customers aren't asking for it," he said.

The company said it will invest £1bn over the next six years to develop 15 "all-new" cars or derivatives.

Today it launched the 570GT, a GT version of its 570S, which was named best performance car at the UK Car of the Year awards.
