Passenger numbers at Gatwick swelled in February, figures reveal today, adding weight to the airport’s claim that it should be allowed to add a runway instead of Heathrow.

More than 2.4m passengers travelled through Gatwick Airport last month, a seven per cent increase on the same period in 2014.

The growth was driven by international flights, as domestic passenger number fell by 6.5 per cent, highlighting the airport’s increasing importance as a hub.

Dubai was the biggest growth route seeing passenger numbers rise by 13.6 per cent. The airport also saw an increase in its connectivity with 16 new routes added, including Tunis, Tel Aviv and Jakarta.

Chief executive Stewart Wingate said: “Expanding Gatwick would be a genuinely exciting opportunity, and help to create two world-class gateways for UK and international travellers, promoting competition to keep travel affordable for all.”
