Game on – Farage to take on Clegg over EU

Nigel Farage has accepted Nick Clegg's challenge to debate Britain's membership of the European Union.

Speaking to LBC's Nick Ferrari show, Farage said:

I have absolutely no choice I've got say yes.

He added:

I will do it with Nick Clegg, but the other two, I'd like to see them there as well.

In the wake of Mr Clegg's challenge to the UKIP leader yesterday, a Lib Dem spokesman said:

While we completely disagree, both parties have a very clear position – Nick Clegg leads the party of in and Nigel Farage leads the party of out. There’s really not very much point debating the other two – neither of them have a clear position.

The deputy prime minister's debate challenge came after remarks made by the Lib Dem president Tim Farron, who warned his party they may lose all or most of their seats in the European parliament in the face of an increasingly Eurosceptic public.

Nick Clegg's decision to debate directly with the UKIP leader may lend further support to the argument that Nigel Farage should appear in the TV general election debates.
