Briton Chris Froome’s hopes of becoming only the third man to win the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana in the same year look to be over after he crashed in Andorra yesterday.

Froome went to hospital for X-rays after struggling to walk following stage 11 of the Vuelta, which left him seven and a half minutes behind the race leader, Italian Fabio Aru of Astana.

The Team Sky rider, due to represent Britain at cycling’s Road World Championships later this month, suffered a cut knee and injuries to his foot and shoulder, team-mate Geraint Thomas said.

Froome, 30, collided with a roadside barrier while riding uphill just moments after the stage started in Andorra la Vella.
