France has launched air strikes against Islamic State in Syria, the French government announced on Sunday morning.

It's the first time France has launched strikes against the terrorist group in Syria, extending the range of previous military action in neighbouring Iraq.

"Our country thus confirms its resolute commitment to fight against the terrorist threat represented by Daesh [Islamic State]. We will strike each time that our national security is at stake," the French President Francois Hollande's office said in a statement.

The strikes hit targets identified after a fortnight of reconnaissance and were coordinated with coalition partners, it said.

Early this month David Cameron revealed targeted drone strikes against British nationals in Syria had taken place.
