World Islamic Economic Forum Foundation chairman Tun Musa Hitam opened yesterday’s trading session at the London Stock Exchange alongside Alexander Justham, chief executive of London Stock Exchange Plc.

“We have arrived,” Musa Hitam said after the event. He hailed the opening as a mark of the importance of Islamic finance to the capital. “There is no better sign of recognition or acceptance,” he said.

London’s deputy mayor Sir Edward Lister, also at the event, emphasised the importance of showcasing London as an attractive business destination. “We want to show the benefits that international business can bring,” he said.

To date, over $34bn (£21bn) has been raised through Islamic bond-like issues on the London Stock Exchange.
